Plant of the Month
Snowdrops are so welcome at this time of the year, they make us feel Spring is not too far away. We need this more than ever now as the current Lockdown is set to continue for at least another three weeks.
The snowdrops are planted in with the paeonies and it is lovely to see them spread into a white carpet before their blue-green leaves appear. This foliage also protects the reddish paeony shoots when they start into growth at the end of the month. .
For more information and growing tips please go to the Garden Diary page.
Daphne Jacqueline Postill has grown into a delightful shrub and continues to fill the garden with rich perfume.
My Garden Diary
The February page is a watercolour study of snowdrop flowers and features the challenge of painting white flowers on a white background.
Like most watercolour artists I do not use white paint, the paper is the white. The flowers are created by painting the green growing parts and the shadows to make the white flower appear. If you want to have a go, make a light drawing of the flower in a soft B pencil and then carefully paint the green stem, leaves and flower markings. Then look carefully to see where the shadows are and gently add these.
My old students will remember this well, it was one of the painting exercises I demonstrated for them to then create a Winter landscape wth snow, a real challenge but great fun.
